Pooch

My dear boy Pooch became very ill yesterday evening. He had been fine all day,and it was about seven in the evening,Mino and I were working in the garden and I thought I would just check on him as I do. If he loses sight of me he panics and I had not seen him for maybe 10 minutes or so. I found him sat on the veranda not breathing well at all. Now Pooch suffers from a serious heart problem, due to the woman that owned him previously ,when we lived in Portugal, she could not be bothered to protect him from heart worm, which in the Algarve is rife! She abandoned him and his two brothers, can you imagine. My goodness I hope one day she gets just what she deserves! Pooch had heart worm when we found him,we had him treated and it was succesful, but it left him with an enlarged heart, which in his later life has caused all sorts of problems. He has been with us for almost eight years, and has been my soul mate,my special boy and he means the world to me.

poochingarden_1600x1200We got him to the vets, who was about to close, and he gave him IV lasix,a dirueretic, because his lungs were full of fluid, and his heart was unable to pump properly. He also had an injection of antibiotic and a patch called Nitroderm,on the inside of his ear.The patch was apparently something to try and make his heart function better. They belong to a group of medicines called nitrates.Nitrates work by widening blood vessels, letting more blood and oxygen reach the heart.

Neither Mino or myself slept much last night as,he had to have another injection of lasix at 1.30am,we had to keep an eye on him.But there is nothing either of us wouldn't do for him, such is our love for him.

This morning he is just a little better. Our vet has phoned to see how he is and also to prescribe the lasix tablet form now.But he is still a very poorly boy. I cannot bear the thought of anything happening to him. He gives me love in the truest form.We will continue to do all we can to help him through this.We will not give up on him yet. I am not ready to say goodbye to you yet Pooie,so you had better get better fast.

Dog, My Friend

When God had made the Earth and sky,
The flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals
And all the birds and bees.

And when his work was finished,
Not one was quite the same.
He said, 'I'll walk this earth of mine,
And give each one a name'.

And so he travelled land and sea,
And everywhere he went,
A little creature followed Him
Until his strength was spent.

And when all were named upon the Earth,
And in the sky and sea,
The little creature said, 'Dear Lord,
There's not one left for me!'

The Father smiled and softly said:
'I've left you till the end.
I've turned my own name back to front,
And called you DOG, my friend.'

My thoughts are with you Val and Mino how easier our lives would be without all the worry we go through and despair when our best buddies are ill, but like you i would'nt change it for the world my dogs are my life like yours, so we have all fingers and 24 paws crossed here for little Pooch. And i think whoever wrote that poem was a very special person and it has always been my favourite one as it say's it all.
